In that frustrating atmosphere of dry mouth, expectation and disappointment sits a small glimmer of hope that the bad spell will be broken and meaningful words will spill out of that capable but paralysed brain.

Before You Develop Your Writing Style
You Need to Start At the Beginning

I first started writing when my father’s secretary upgraded her typewriter. I got her cast off model. It had a combined black and red ribbon and clunky keys that had to be hit hard to make letters appear clear and sharp on the paper.

This typewriter weighed a ton and had a bell that pinged loudly every time you reached the end of a line and hit the lever that slid the carriage noisily to the beginning of the next line.

It was a whole keep fit class just operating the thing.

As soon as it arrived, I wasted no time in getting started.

My output was prolific.

I wish I had kept some of those early efforts, as they would serve as a warning to others.

I was trying to write stories; adventure stories and exciting fiction that my adoring readers would be dribbling to get hold of.

I got through reams of paper before I stopped to read anything I had written with a critical eye.

Of course, when I did read this stuff back, it struck me that I had launched straight into the action bits (which is the part I liked) and completely ignored the need for a beginning middle and end.

The beginning, middle and end plan is the simplest piece of structure you can use to give your writing some meaningful order. It is the first step in organizing your thoughts and getting them down on paper so that someone else can read your words and make total sense of them.

There are many tricks to help you write better that I am adding to this website but the first basic step is to understand the form of writing – and that fundamental plan applies to every piece of writing ever written – and to life itself.

We’re born – we live – we die . . . that’s a beginning middle and end, although none of us are too keen on the last part.

To satisfy the readers of your story – your copywriting – your advertising – and your website text – you must have an introduction followed by the main meat of the piece and ending up with a conclusion.

The beginning of your novel or short story introduces the characters while setting the scene. This leads into the middle of the story where the main part of the action takes place. The end of the tale is the conclusion which ties up all the loose ends and delivers your reader brimming with satisfaction and gasping to buy your sequel.

Your advertisement starts by identifying a need, followed by attractive details about the product or service that should hook the reader. The conclusion is the offer of all the information about how to buy the solution to satisfy that hunger.

The website you build will have a landing page that engages visitors with the site content. This beginning will lead to further content and information that is the middle. The end will come when the visitors are directed to a solution that you will design to satisfy the reason for their visits.

Beginning, middle and end. You can’t escape the importance of this simple structure.

Recognizing it’s relevance is the very first step in a long and rewarding journey into the world of writing – no matter which genre you are aiming for.
